UrbanPlan for Communities & Public Officials

UrbanPlan one-day workshops are ideal for local decision makers who would like to learn more about the fundamental forces that shape and affect the built environment and the important leadership roles that elected and appointed officials as well as community members and leaders play in the real estate development process.

Communities:

Through this interactive workshop, community members learn how land use decisions are made and become a stronger, united voice in shaping their community. Participants will leave with tools to create collaborative relationships with public officials and the development community

UrbanPlan helps empower community members to become active, vested stakeholders in the future of their neighborhoods. What type of development do they want? Or do they not want development at all? Leave understanding the importance of having a voice in the process and how to use that voice. By taking on the role of developer, participants in the workshop get a chance to broaden their knowledge.

Public Officials:

The workshop will enable public officials to better understand the trade-offs and risk at play in the entitlement and negotiation process associated with land use, especially in public/private partnerships. The UrbanPlan case study is an example of a city-led redevelopment effort where compromise needs to be met between the locality, development team selected in the RFP, and the community.

Leaders will leave with tools to create collaborative relationships with community members and private-sector partners to make city-led projects a success.

The workshop is intended for elected officials, appointed officials, and community members and leaders.

What to Expect at the Workshop:

The workshop typically runs eight hours including a working lunch. In the workshop, participants get a chance to broaden their knowledge in the following areas:

  • The basics of a pro forma (financial model) and funding a complex project
  • The economics of different building types and community benefits
  • The different time horizons for the public and private sectors and how they work in tandem
  • The risk associated with lengthy negotiations among all parties
  • The importance of a clear and open process in the selection of a private partner
