A multidisciplinary nationwide firm 4,300 strong, our local presence and relationships help us deliver well. Whether it be one of Kimley-Horn’s landscape architects in the San Diego office, or a civil engineer in one of the firm’s Texas locations, virtual cross-team collaboration is key across the firm, and part of each employee’s day-to-day. “Working collaboratively allows us to not only function best as a team and learn each other’s strengths, but also best serve our clients and our local community,” said Michael Madsen, Landscape Architect in Kimley-Horn’s San Diego office.
Staying up to date with the latest industry trends and sharing those with clients and potential clients is a crucial element of our culture; Kimley-Horn’s team is in constant communication both internally and externally with city, county, and statewide officials, organizations, and industry experts to ensure that its employees and partners stay ahead of the curve and go above and beyond for clients. Some of their insights are shared through Perspectives installments (located on Kimley-Horn’s website, under News and Insights) to educate the industry, especially regarding recent shifts in work due to the current events. Kimley-Horn also has been featured in multiple articles on ULI’s website.
Cultivating positive relationships in surrounding communities and providing sustainable, ethical, and quality services to clients in sensitive areas is top priority for Kimley-Horn.
This is exemplified in many disciplines and project types across the region; among them, affordable housing.
One of our local affordable housing projects where we provided landscape architecture and civil engineering services is Zephyr, an 85-studio apartment complex for homeless Veterans with a community garden. The project was awarded the prestigious Ruby Award shortly after, and we are proud of the positive local impact.
Community-driven projects like Zephyr have become a focus of Kimley-Horn’s San Diego office. Katy Daneker, one of our local civil engineers, and her team, worked on the split-form, 20,000 square foot Neighborhood Target in North Park. This store, located in a historically significant area, incorporated shopper-friendly visuals and interactive elements, such as a colorful outdoor kinetic sundial, and indoor and outdoor locally-crafted murals. The process to complete this project was lengthy, cautious, and relied heavily on community input.
“It’s inspiring to work with a client who wants to bring value to the community,” Daneker said. Daneker’s practice focuses primarily on due diligence, entitlement research, and construction documents for commercial developments for local and national clients, and her high energy and passion for serving local communities has served her well and received high praise from her clients.
